Install the Chief of Staff Slack app, pick which channels Alex has access to, and seed the shared business profile. Five minutes total.
Before you start
Slack workspace admin access (or permission to add apps)
A Chief of Staff account (free works — upgrade later)
Your team's current goal and bottleneck (for the shared profile)
Steps
/01
Install the Chief of Staff Slack app
From your workspace Admin → App directory, search for "Chief of Staff by LearnAI." Click Install. Slack will walk you through permission scopes — Alex needs to DM, respond in channels when @mentioned, and read its own messages.
Alex never reads messages it wasn't @mentioned in. Channel members can DM Alex privately.
/02
Connect your Chief of Staff account
After install, Slack will redirect you to getchiefofstaff.com to link the workspace to your account. Sign in (or sign up) and approve the connection. Workspaces on Team and Company plans link to a single shared business profile.
/03
Seed the business profile
Alex opens a DM with the installing admin and runs the four-question intake: business type, current goal, biggest bottleneck, time available. This becomes the shared memory every teammate shares when they talk to Alex.
You can edit the business profile any time from the web app under Settings → Business profile.
/04
Invite Alex to channels
In any channel, type /invite @alex. Once invited, Alex only responds when explicitly @mentioned. No silent listening.
/05
First @mention
Try @alex what should we focus on this week? Alex replies in-thread with a prioritized answer grounded in the shared business profile.
Troubleshooting
Alex isn't responding to @mentions
Confirm Alex was invited to the channel via /invite @alex. Check Chief of Staff → Settings → Slack to confirm the workspace is linked.
Alex can't remember what we discussed last week
Each teammate's DMs with Alex are private. Shared business memory is surfaced in channel conversations. To log a decision to shared memory, @mention Alex in the relevant channel.
How do I remove Alex from a channel?
Standard Slack flow: channel settings → Integrations → remove Chief of Staff. Alex's shared memory remains intact.
Per-seat billing — which seats count?
A seat is active in a billing month if any Slack user in your workspace DMed Alex or @mentioned Alex at least once. Inactive seats don't bill.
